Vicksburg Military Park

Let's celebrate Memorial Day week in the best place possible....
The Vicksburg National Military Park !!!!

Row of Cannons in front of the Illinois Memorial in light fog

It has a memorial for every state in the nation and several Civil war displays and artifacts.  It is a HUGE place so plan to spend at least 3-4 hours there.  There is even a Iron Clad union warship on display recovered from the bottom of the Mississippi. The entrance fee for a motorcycle is $15.00, regardless of how many people are on it.

We will ride down Thursday, leaving from McKinney.  It's a 375 mile ride so we can't dilly-dally.. We will have lunch in Jefferson TX.  I picked the BBQ place but there is also a great sandwich shop next door.  After that, we will go by Caddo Lake and then onto I-20 for a blast to Vicksburg.  Appropriate gas and bathroom stops have been planned.

We plan to stay at the Holiday Inn Express on the Eastern side of Vicksburg.  I have stayed there a few times and like it.  They have a good free breakfast and even a  free happy hour with food, beer, and wine!  If you prefer another hotel choice, there are several options near by.

Dinner Thursday will be at the "10 South Rooftop Bar and Grill" in downtown Vicksburg.  It has great views and moderately priced food. We will get there around 5:00 (when they open) for an early dinner but may stay for the great sunset view. They don't take reservations but they have asked me to let them know how many are coming a few days in advance.

For breakfast each day there is a free buffet at the hotel.  Otherwise, there is a Waffle house across the street and a Cracker Barrel just down the street.

Dinner Friday will be at the "Gumbo Pot" in Vicksburg with a very wide selection of food that includes several Cajun favorites as well as burgers and steaks.

Lunch Friday will be at the "Cottonwood Public House" in downtown Vicksburg. It's a short ride from the Military Park or the Holiday Inn.
Or you can take your lunch and stay at the park.

Saturday we are riding the Natchez Trace Parkway to Natchez.
There we will visit "The Kings Tavern", an almost 200 year old home converted into a restaurant.  Yes, it is haunted.... and is the oldest standing building in Natchez.

You can also tour the Natchez waterfront and other historic sites before heading back to Vicksburg.

Dinner Saturday will be at the Pizza Inn, just across the street from the Holiday Inn Express.  You can also choose any of the other fine restaurants in the area or even the Casinos....

The ride home is also long.  We will take a more direct route than on the way down and will stop in Marshall for lunch.
